Santa Barbaran surffaushistoria ulottuu lähes sadan vuoden taakse, ja jopa nuorimmat paikalliset tuntevat olonsa kotoisaksi surffilaudan päällä. Julkkisten kansoittamat asumukset täplittävät kukkuloiden rinteitä, ja kaupungin suuri opiskelijapopulaatio tuo tullessaan aimo annoksen nuorekasta energiaa.

Nähtävyyksiä ja kulttuuria

Santa Barbaran rannat ovat kaupungin tärkein vetonaula. Lekottele auringonvarjon alla East Beachillä, jonka valkoisen hiekan ja palmupuiden taustalla häämöttää komea vuoriketju. Käyskentele Stearns Wharfissa kymmenien kauppojen ja Kalifornian parhaisiin lukeutuvien näkymien keskellä. Nauti Old Mission Buildingin espanjalaisesta arkkitehtuurista ja tutustu yli 2000 kasvi- ja eläinlajiin Channel Islandsin kansallispuistossa.

Shoppailua

EF sijaitsee vain korttelin päässä State Streetin mukulakivetyltä kävelykadulta, joka tarjoaa yli mailin pätkän kaikkea trendikkäistä putiikeista suosittuihin kauppaketjuihin. Katsasta Paseo Nuevon kauppakeskuksen tasokkaat kaupat ja maistele paikallisia tuotteita Santa Barbaran maalaismarkkinoilla.

Urheilua ja ulkoilua

Ympärivuotista auringonpaistetta käsittävän ilmaston ansiosta aktiiviset paikalliset viettävät suurimman osan ajastaan ulkona. Käy surffaustunneilla Rinconin rannan aalloilla ja sukeltele tai melo Channel Islandsin kansallispuiston vesissä. Vaella Santa Ynezin vuorilla tai osallistu EF:n järjestämään jalkapalloon, tennikseen, koripalloon tai rantalentikseen.

Retkiä

Bongaa julkkiksia Los Angelesissa, kävele San Fransiscon ikonisen Golden Gaten sillan yli ja ota lähikontaktia San Diegon merimaailman delfiineihin. Luonnon ystävät voivat ihailla Pohjois-Amerikan luonnon mahtavaa mittakaavaa retkellä Yosemiten kansallispuistoon.

Viihdettä ja yöelämää

Santa Barbaran tuhansilla opiskelijoilla on tärkeä rooli kaupungin yöelämässä erityisesti vilkkaan State Streetin ympäristössä. Maista paikallisista avocadoista valmistettua tuoretta guacamolea aidossa meksikolaisessa ravintolassa ja käy konsertissa Santa Barbara Bowlin amfiteatterissa, josta aukeaa upea kanjoni- ja merimaisema.

Summer Solstice Parade & Festival

You can join the party or watch from the sidelines as extravagant floats, whimsical costumes and creatively choreographed dancing ensembles march through the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. The event welcomes over 100,000 spectators.

Santa Barbara French Festival

Put your beret on and travel to France sans phrase book with Santa Barbara's French Festival. Hosted by Oak Park, the festival recreates French culture with sidewalk cafés, arts, music and dance - all in commemoration of the French Revolution.

Old Spanish Days Fiesta

Discover Santa Barbara's Spanish and Mexican heritage during the annual Old Spanish Days Fiesta held in locations across the city. The festival includes art markets, music, dance performances, plenty of food and a horse show & rodeo.

Music Academy of the West Summer Festival

Every summer for eight weeks Santa Barbara presents the Music Academy of the West Summer Festival, where classical music merges with a laid-back Californian vibe. The festival welcomes gifted classical singers and instrumentalists to venues across the city.

Santa Barbara Pier ushers in the festive season with the annual Parade of Lights. A tree-lighting ceremony is held before the boat parade which is followed by a fireworks display, an awards ceremony and an after-party.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival showcases a broad range of independent films from American and international film-makers at venues across this Californian city. It also features competitions, symposiums and children's programmes.

Commercial and amateur growers from the West and Pacific Rim bring thousands of their most perfect blooms to the Earl Warren Showgrounds for the annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. There are also ongoing demonstrations about orchid culture.
